Redefining Mission Field

There is a need for us to redefine the meaning of a mission field. We need to evaluate our understanding of what a mission field is in the light of the scripture of truth.

The popular understanding of a mission field is that it is a place far away from your resident location that you go to preach the gospel.

While those places pass for mission fields, our acceptance of that as the definition of what a mission field is contributes to the reason some Christians do not go out for evangelism.

In the light of this understanding of what a mission field is, we hear statements like, if you cannot go to the mission field, let your money go for you. Christian leaders say things like this to encourage people to give financially to their mission works since the people cannot go on those trips as they do.

You would discover shortly from the redefinition of a mission field that every Christian can go to a mission field.

In the light of scripture, a mission field is anywhere a Christian is that has unbelievers as neighbors.

Your residence (if you have unbelieving neighbors) is a mission field. Your community is a mission field. Your school is a mission field. Your workplace is a mission field. The event you are attending is a mission field. The marketplace you are in is a mission field. The gym you are exercising at is a mission field. Everywhere you go to that has an unbeliever there is a mission field.

Instead of looking to distant lands as the definition of a mission field, we must look at our present location as the true definition of a mission field.

Jesus was by the well, and a woman came by to fetch water. Jesus preached to her because he acknowledged that the well-side was a mission field.

Even the command for us to preach the gospel emphasizes we begin in our immediate environment before we go to distant lands.

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
— Acts 1:8 (KJV)

A mission field is wherever you are that has an unbeliever as a neighbor.

The harvest is great, and laborers will no longer be few.
